Dear York Road residents
INVITATION
TO JOIN THE YORK ROAD RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION
If you are relative newcomers to the street, welcome – and greetings to all the oldies.
The York Road Residents’ Association (YRRA) was formed in the early 2000s to give York Road residents the opportunity to meet, communicate, and take collective action on matters affecting York Road and the people who live here. Our activities include responding to new developments, raising awareness of suspicious activity in the road, checking power outages, and creating a safer York Road for all.
Our main purpose – and the one that is undoubtedly of great benefit to all in the road, is the employment of our street guard, Daniel Mpofu, who is on duty from 6 am to 6 pm Mondays to Fridays.
We also have a YRRA WhatsApp group, which is a wonderful communication tool, especially when it comes to load shedding, suspicious cars in the road, recommendations for plumbers and electricians, fibre options, the occasional runaway dog, and much more.
This letter is a call to all our York Road residents to join the YRRA!
The small monthly subscription (R250) goes to Daniel’s wages, public holiday double time, Christmas bonus, and cell phone. This has not increased much over the last few years. We believe Daniel is a valuable presence and indispensable to the overall security of the road.
We know that many residents are linked to security companies and that Eastgate Primary and many of the businesses have their own security. However, wouldn’t you agree that R250 is a very small price to pay for an extra pair of eyes and ears in the road? In fact, if we could double our current subscriptions (14), we could look at employing a night guard as well – which would really help those residents who come home late at night or have evening guests.
Daniel has been a great asset to the road. He is always prepared to help any of our residents, whether they contribute to his wages or not. This is an invitation to join the YRRA so that we can better support him, institute night time security, and have a critical mass of people working together to ensure the well-being of York Road and our neighbourhood.
At our last YRRA meeting, held on 16 November, the following decisions were taken:
We will open our WhatsApp group to all residents of York Road, irrespective of whether they are contributing members, until the end of March 2020. From the beginning of April 2020, we will, regrettably, limit the group to paying households only. We urge you all to join it now so that you can see for yourselves the benefit it holds.
All paying households will be given display boards indicating that they are active contributors to the YRRA. This will enable Daniel to prioritise those households. He will also be instructed not to provide special services to non-paying residents (like escorting them and their guests, and keeping a special watch over their homes).
We hope that we can convince a few more of you to join the YRRA and in so doing really step up safety and security in our street, increase neighbourliness among ourselves, and support Daniel, who is so committed to supporting all of us.
Only
R250 a month for greater peace of mind!
